Help with encouraging Scots use in the primary classroom.
In 2001 former teacher and lecturer Aileen McEwen wrote about the benefits of using Scots in the classroom, and the wider impact of having two languages. Her article was aimed at probationer teachers in Aberdeenshire who were perhaps unsure of their own Scots language knowledge. It contained some very useful ideas they could use so they could become more comfortable using Scots and to encourage the children to use more of what they already know. Here are some of the suggestions Aileen made.
1-Acquire a good Scots dictionary and books of poem/rhymes such as those by JK Annand or Sheena Blackhall and Les Wheeler.
2-Keep an inventory of all Scots you know and keep adding to this vocabulary store. Note regional variations.
3-Invite a Scots speaker to speak or sing in the classroom. Parents or grandparents can be willing to do this.
4-Listen out for Scots words the children use themselves, then include these words yourself in activities, even if it is one Scots word and the rest of your speech is Scottish English.
5-Get the children to write down all the Scots words they know and create a picture dictionary.
6-Use singing games and rhymes. Familiar songs can be changed to include Scots words and children will enjoy creating extra verses using their Scots vocabulary, made up words, or a combination of different Scots, English and made up words.
