Scots an Dutch

Weil, I wis fair scunnered efter watchin the fitba on Setterday nicht. Scotland wis outclassed, nae quaystion. Whan ye'r up agin a side that can pit players like Snijder on the bench ye ken ye've yer wark cut out for ye - an we dinna hae an Eidur Gudjonsson tae bigg a team aroun. O course, wi that monie fowk out injured it wis aye gaein tae be e'en hairder, an I dinna think monie o us thocht a Scotland win wis on the cairds.

Nanetheless, gin ye'r sae up agin it as Scotland wis, ye hae tae be weil orginisit an outfecht the ithir side. That's whit we did sae weil in the last campaign - it warked twa time agin Fraunce, an awmaist warked agin Italy. Nou, tae be fair, wir side wisna like the heidless chickens we uissit tae see unner Herr Vogts (maugre o a hantle stray passes an Alexander bein sae faur out o position at the first goal), but the fecht wisna there. There wis nae period o sustained Scots pressure, the Dutch dida luik unner threat for mair nor ane meinute at a time. Still an aw, haed the Scots goal stuid (an I still canna see hou it never) I wunner whit wad hae haippened. It micht hae been the spark we wis needin, it micht no - either wey it suld hae countit. Nae complaints about the penalty, but.

Nou, I ne'er need mair nor the flimsiest excuse tae blether about the links awteen Scots an ithir languages, an I think fitba gie's as guid as onie. Scots an Dutch hae been in contack for monie centuries - trade wi Dutch ports gaes back a lang wey - a luik at sic Scots names as "Fleming" or place names like John o Groats (named for a Dutch man that wis gied land by James IV) tae see the influence the Dutch haes haed on Scotland. The Northren Isles is maist aften connecktit wi Scandinavia, but a strang Dutch presence also exists there - there'r a Holland in Orkney.

Whan I gaed ower tae Amsterdam for ma holidays twa year syne I wrate doun whit I saw o Dutch wurds that wadna luik out o place in wir ain touns:

- Niet roken - nae smokin (think o Auld Reekie. I dinna ken gin fowk "reek" fags an cutties ower here - onie help?)

- Hulp - hulp

- Niets aon te geven - naething tae declare

- Nummer - Nummer

- Uitgang - Wey out (gang out...)

- Lichtmast - lampost. No came across this in Scots, but wadna be out o place, wad it?

- Lig - lig.

There wis "Afwijkende" an aw - that I think means "odd sized". No shair gin this exists in Scots an aw, but it souns like it coud be anithir wurd alang the lines o "fankle" an "fouter". "Affykendy"? Souns Scots.

Cheerio an God Bless

Hopin for better again Iceland (Scots cognates by the haunfou! Braw!)!

Dunc
