See awthin in Scots

Ma thochts on the schuills

Posted by Duncan

As a bodie that supports Gaelic as weill as Scots, I wis hairtened tae see the guid news anent the Tollcross Gaelic Primary Schuill in Embra lest week.  The Herald and Toast (er, Post) carriet the story on the front page , that can be seen here: http://www.facebook.com/#!/photo.php?pid=5049954&id=176295744681&fbid=422205739681&ref=mf

The results shaws up the threip that weans bein eddicate in onie leid ither nor Inglish is at a disadvantage for the havers it is.  I ken o fowk i the Hielands no wantin their weans tae gae tae a Gaelic unit i the local schuill acuase they dinna want thaim tae be “thick”.  Weill, as though there wisna eneuch evidence awreidy that this wis blethers, the H&P report is there for aw tae read.

Aw weill an guid, but whit haes this dae wi Scots?  Simply that the same principle ocht tae apply.  Tae eddicate Scots-speakin bairns i Scots seems controversial tae sum fowk, for sum reason – fowk sic as the Express an the Federation of Small Businesses.  The scunnersome idea that speakin Scots is wrang an it shaws ye up as “thick” haes been shawn tae be havers time an time again.  Furdermair, ilka time schuill-weans  daes Scots projecks an warkdays (wi the Readin Bus, wi Scots activists an sae on) it comes out as a success.  It’s guid tae ken that we’ve came on frae the days whan the domine wad gie the belt tae a wean for speakin their ain tung, but we’r no nearly faur eneuch on the gate tae equality for Scots, e’en i the places whaur it’s aye the community leid.

Bob Fairnie’s blog kivvers this i mair detail, sae I’ll jist leave ye wi this thocht:  Whit wey dae we gar bairns growe up wi jist the yin leid whan awbodie kens they can speak mair?  I leuk forrit tae the day whan a paper hails hou weill a Scots-medium unit is daein... but til than we’ve tae owercome a fair whack o ignorance an prejudice – specially frae the media, it maun be said.

Aw the best,

Dunc
